          Kalari means place, open space, threshing floor, battlefield where martial exercises are taught. Payattu means, to exercise in arms. The guidance of a Gurukkal is a must for  training this art in a spiritual atmosphere. The religious rituals and practice of exercises make Kalari safe from inadvertent injury, help develop a devotional attitude and contribute to student’s interior transformation.
          Normally, kalaripayattu can be started at the age of seven, when the body is not stiff, less chance to damage. But it can be practiced at any age under the supervision of a well experienced master
 

Vadakkan Sampradayam(Northern Style)

 
The Vadakkan style of kalaripayattu is mainly based on the flexible body movements. It allows the body to move freely in any angle. Hence with regular practice one can perfect the body.  Kalaripayattu is necessary to those who practice Kathakali, and dance or like this Arts those need flexibility of body.

Meythari (The first one is BODY exercises which consisting of body movements like)

 
1, KALARIVANAKKAM
It is the Salutation or Respect for KALARI with the body movements.
 
2, POOTHARA VANAKKAM
It is another salutation for the assumed image of KALARI.
 
3, KAALUGAL
Raising of Legs in different angles gives us balance and make them flexible.
 
4, KAIKUTTI PAYATT
It is the exercise to make body powerful with flexibility and also for balance.
 
5, MAIPAYATT
It is the exercise concerning only to body flexibility and for balance and also helps us for  perfect landing.
 
6, CHUMATTADI
It is the exercise for the fast movement with balance in all directions and also with power.
 
 
 

Kolthari (Wooden weapon Training System)

 
1, KETTUKARI
It is a long stick, which is a bamboo and will be nearly 170 cm in length with a straight look is also used for the combat where you can attain the speed of 120hits/min with the opponent.
 
2, MUCHAN
It is a short stick which is nearly 60 cm long with a straight look is used for the practice of combat with it we can attainthe speed of nearly 300 hits/min if you are a good practitioner.
 
3, OTTA
It is also the short stick, which is nearly 75 cm in length with a curved shape. Its attack is mainly based on the Marma points of the body.
 
 
 

Ankathari (Metal Weapons Training System)

 
1, KATHI
It is an ordinary knife. It is used for self-defense as well as for attack.
 
2, KADARA
It is a metal weapon. It is 23 cm long, has a slightly curved shape and is used in the combat.
 
3, SPEAR
(KUNTHAM) The sharp edge of the spear is 26 cm and the total length with the wooden handle or metal handle is totally 185 cm.
 
4, FENCING
Fencing is a familiar word in all Martial Arts. But in Kalari it is a fight without any coverings.
 
5, VALUM  PARICHAYUM
(SWORD AND SHIELD) the sword is nearly 90cm long and the shield is 43 cm in diameter. It is a very dangerous and interesting weapon in combat.
 
6, URUMI
It is the metal weapon, which is very flexible and can be folded. A very dangerous weapon  195 cm long . An experienced person can only use It. Otherwise it will cut the person who uses.
 
 
 

GADA It is also called mace, which will be nearly 90 cm long, with top rounded and with the                   handle.

 
 
 

Verum Kai Prayogam (Bare hand combat system)

 
The Verum Kai Prayogam or unarmed fighting technique, is the fourth stage of Kalari training. This is a unique method of offence and defense. In this technique, various holds, grips and locks are combined with knuckle and elbow hits directed at Marmas or vital points of the opponent's body. By this method, one can disable an enemy completely. Usually, knowledge of this kind is not passed on indiscriminately to any one but only to those with a disciplined life who guarantees that the knowledge will not be misused. There are a number of scholars who believe that the unarmed fighting techniques of Kalarippayatt is the base for the world famous Karate.
 
 
New methods those are developed for stage shows by us:-
 
1, MARA PIDICHA KUNTHAM
Spear versus  sword and shield.
 
2, CHURIKA PAYATT
A Churika is a double-edged weapon. Its central width is 8 cm, and the length is an arm’s length. In this fight Churika and shield is used.
 
3, MOONAL VALUM PARICHAYUM
Three men with sword and shield. Two attackers and one defender.
 
4, MOONAL KUNTHAM
Three men with SPEAR. Two attackers and one defender.
 
5, MOONAL KATHI
(Three men knives). Two attack an unarmed person with knives.
 
6, VEN MAZHU
Two men with axes and shields.
 
7, VAL VALI
(Sword technique.)It is a performance with a sword. It is dragged all over the body up and down and sides.
 
8, VAJRADHARI
(Waving of long stick): This is a single man performance nice with along glazing sticks. It  cover total body against any attack from any corner. In the olden age, it is believed that the masters of Kalaripayattu used this kind of long stick instead of umbrella against rain.
 
9, VERUM KAI MUCHAN
A fight with bare hand against a person who carries short stick.
 
10, CHOTTA CHAN CHUVAD
“Chotta” means a weapon that is made of antler. This was used old times. The weapons are worn in both hands and the performer moves every side and uses the weapon.
 
 
 

Thekkan Sampradayam (Southern Style)

 
Southern style of Kalaripayattu is popular in southern part of Kerala. It combines various techniques and methods. The practice does not include body flexibility and anyone can do those easily at any age. It is also very easy to apply as self-defense.
